Wanted: Style Guru / Sandwich Appreciator

I don’t know style, but I know what I like. So I’m starting a collection. If I find something I love online, I’ll bookmark it. If it’s in print, I’ll tear out the page and stuff it in my pocket. At one point, I can amass all the dribs and drabs into a scrapbook of sorts. My “Dream Renovation Wishbook” or something to that effect.

If I’m lucky, a ‘style’ will reveal itself. I’m not sure what I am. I know what I’m not...Classic French Colonial, for example (I might have made that niche up, but it sounds like not-me). I don’t care much for lace, ornate flourishes, pastels, or anything that won’t hide food stains and cat hair fairly easily. There’s a place for all these, just not Chez Nous.

I’d like to think that with focus, I can choose stylish, sexy furniture that’s both practical and beautiful. But I’m afraid. What if it doesn’t “go”? How will I know? What if my style is incoherent? Inconsistent? Will anyone tell me or will people make vague comments like “Oh...What a good use of...space”?
I love all these things, for example, but will they all get along.

"Econo" Series Beds by Sua-V                              "Jacob" Sectional by William

"Opus" Chair by Amisco                  "Verona" Table by Trica              "Jenny" Chair by Alphavic

So, I need a guru. A style guru. Someone who can flip through this so-far-still-imaginary scrapbook and pick out the gems, burning the rest. Someone to supervise me when I purchase, so I stay on track and not impulse buy a hideous lamp or nasty area rug. Also someone to push me out of my comfort zone a little. I’m a timid purchaser, and could use a pep talk or two at times. And then of course, they will have to come home with me and help me arrange it all.

Please submit CVs in the comment section below. The hours are sporadic, the pay is terrible, and the working conditions highly variable. But I’m nice, and I’ll make sandwiches.

Magda, I have seen your blog, and therefore, the inside of your house. I can learn much from you. Your taste is elegant, refined, modern, and....um...AWESOME. So don't you tell lies on my blog. What's your mom's availability? Does she like sandwiches?
    Cheers!

    Hi Sara,

I beg to differ on the style part! I think you have fabulous style, it's eclectic, unique, funky and I'm sure your Dream Renovation Book is filled with wonderful treats which I would love to help you with.

I wouldn't call myself a style guru but I would say i do have a keen eye for edgy and interesting design and have helped many steer away from the tragic life of a pack rat. Like you, I know what I don't like so to share this with someone would be a lot of fun.

A little about me: I love design, food, furniture with a penchant love for chairs - I own many - I rarely sit on them.

I use them as tables, bookshelves, art, you name it- and besides, looking at them is way more gratifying.

Oh and food for thought is my kind of trade, I look forward to those sandwiches - I think I'm the gal for the job:) - Z http://www.about.me/zina.rahman

You are too kind, Zina. I appreciate the friendly feedback. I am definitely prone to pack-ratism, and have a hard time throwing anything interesting or useful away...or passing it by, for that matter.
I too am discovering the joy of chairs-as-anything-but-chairs!
Though I know I need help, I'm not quite there yet. Looking forward to Spring Cleaning and a good purge. You should create a business based on your ability to organise peoples existing items into a beautiful, livable space. There's definitely a market for that.
    All the best!
    Sara
