The Right Amount of Retro

One huge trend we have seen emerge in home décor in recent years is the return of mid-century modern. From Brady Bunch inspired interiors to the resurgence of vintage Danish teak this look has been growing in popularity for some time. At first we saw it mostly being used in urban loft spaces and open concept homes. Now, this look has gone more mainstream as people realize how flexible and fresh mid-century inspired furniture looks.

However this popularity presents a problem… when shopping for vintage pieces the supply only lasts so long, the quality sometimes is not great and with increased popularity the prices are driven way up. The solution? Buy new! A few of my favourite Quality Canadian Furniture manufacturers have come up with key pieces that reflect the overall look and feel of mid-century design but have a look that is slightly fresher. And the best part is they are new. I’m not going to lie, sometimes the thought of resting my head on a 40 year old sofa… well I’d need to recover that sofa first!!

Here are my top picks for (new) retro inspired furniture:

Ad Lib sectional by William: I love the sleek design, chunky armrest and the fabrics!! The fabrics really make this piece. I love the mix and match appeal and the use of orange and brown. And the addition of grey to this look is a fresh, modern approach.

The Duo Buffet by Trica: The wood used in this piece is defiantly a nod to classic 60’s and 70’s design. It is simple, unfussy and would work in any style of place. I also like the modern twist on the legs. While designed as a buffet I would also consider this for a cabinet underneath a wall-mounted television. Accent this piece with bold glass accessories in orange, brown and maybe a hint of red.
