Rustic Style

When decorating a space I love mixing eras and styles of furniture. If this eclectic mix is done well, it can really give a space more character and charm.  These days however it has become increasingly difficult to find rustic, reclaim or well-worn antique furniture. Also if you are shopping for furniture pieces that require matching multiples (dining or kitchen chairs) you may find you spend hours, days, even weeks searching.

Fortunately several savvy furniture manufactures have designed collections that have a vintage quality and patina. One of my favorites is The Canadel Collection by Canadel. Canadel has been creating solid birch furniture for over 25 years and the Canadel collection focuses on dining and kitchen tables that can be customized in over 65 colours and 3 finishes. If you are looking for a rustic, turn of the century barn or harvest table and chairs I would recommend the “antique finish”. The design of the tables and chairs also capture tradition craftsman styles from Shaker-inspired to Mission. I love all the options! They also have a very cool online design system that lets you create and customize a look that works for your décor and lifestyle.

If you are looking for an early-Canadian look you have to check out Springwater Woodcraft . Springwater’s furniture is made from Pine (from sustainably managed forests) and the design and finish feature old-fashioned techniques, including the use of milk paints. I like that Springwater’s furniture has a distinct look.

Just last Friday while I was out shopping for a kitchen/ dining table, I popped into The Pine Store on King Street East (Toronto), I was delighted to see several Springwater pieces (and happy that I recognized their work on sight). I chatted with the owner about the quality and design and he let me know that Springwater is a favourite of his and of many of his customers. My favourite Springwater piece is the McCrae table, named in honour of Canadian poet John McCrae, author of In Flanders Fields. I like the clean lines of this piece along with the sense of history it evokes. I think the McCrae table will look amazing in a loft space or modern home as it will add a sense of comfort to an open space.
