Hotel-inspired Design

I love, I mean LOVE-LOVE traveling! I’m a bit of a gypsy, always on the go. And whether I’m traveling for work or play, I’m always checking out design hotels for inspiration. Even when I’m not staying at a particular destination, I will pop into a lobby, hotel restaurant or bar and grab a few quick pictures and enjoy the design. Now if you don’t have a vacation planned, don’t worry, I’ve put together a few of my favourite spots, hopefully these will inspire you! And don’t forget you can always “travel” from your sofa or desk, and are both great website to check out when you are seeking some hotel-inspired design ideas.

When the Hotel du Petit Moulin  , opened in 2007 I immediately booked a flight to Paris just to see the hotel. Designed by Christian Lacroix, who is known for his opulent and decadent fashions, the hotel is an explosion of colour, texture, pattern and life. On a fun note, many of the fabrics Lacroix designed and used in the hotel are now available to the public through Designers Guild.

I spend a fair amount of time in Santa Monica and while I love the bold and colourful Viceroy hotel (designed by Kelly Wearstler) my tastes have recently softened slightly and I have fallen in love with the Huntley hotel. The hotel, with a palette of white, wood and gold, the Huntley is a lesson in how to use texture and line to create and define a space. The overall feeling is warm, cozy yet chic.

With a focus that is more on art and design than gambling, the Cosmopolitan hotel in Las Vegas is a virtual feast for the eyes. While the rooms are designed with a calming and fresh blue and cream palette (which helps keep you relaxed while in sin city), the lobby, lounges and nightclubs are full over the top décor, sparkle and shine. The most inspiring spot to check out in the hotel is the Chandelier bar, which is described as “a bit of playground, art exhibit and cocktail haven all at once.”
