I recently had the opportunity to travel through California’s heartland and was amazed how much the experience moved me. To describe the area as picturesque is an understatement…. rolling hills, rustic frontiers, sunsets that wrapped the entire landscape in warmth. It was however more than just the landscape that makes this heartland and other heartlands throughout North America so special. It’s the people, their values, down home hospitality and their great sense of uncomplicated style, all of these elements combined create the experience. Like the people I encountered here, the design and style is warm, natural, hard working and functional. It is a style that works with the landscape and surroundings; design is crafted using locally sourced materials—cowhides, timber, stone, and pigments from local vegetation.

On a fun note… my voyage ended up being right on trend! I have always loved frontier style, so it thrills me to no end that this look is quickly becoming a top trend for fall. I noticed this look first in fashion on the catwalks (from Derek Lam to Ralph Lauren) for fall 2011. And décor soon followed as frontier style furniture and accessories can be seen in hipster stores in neighborhoods like Venice’s Abbot Kinney, Vancouver’s Gas Town and Toronto’s Queen East.

I encourage exploring this style. Many Quality Canadian Manufacturers are already using locally sourced materials and translating them with a rustic approach. This trend will have plenty of staying power and by introducing select elements of this style into your home will give you a fun, on-trend look. (Check out the images form Surfing Cowboy a great shop in Venice Beach for inspiration on mixing frontier style with modern and mid-century modern décor )

One thing is for sure all of these fall 2011 trends are very eclectic… I think this means our lives are getting more exciting!
